SUSTAINABILITY

SHAPING THE FUTURE
BY COMBINING CREATIVITY
AND MINDFULNESS

Sustainability is not just a word for us. It is a mission: ecological, economic, and social. That’s why we think in these dimensions as a brand and actively commit ourselves within these three areas to create a livable future for everyone. It starts with product development and manufacturing in our home in the Black Forest, extends to our products themselves and their safe use, and goes all the way to diverse social engagement, showing children and young people how empowering creativity can be.

When it comes to our future, we are all on the same team – are you in?

REFILL YOUR MARKER
FOR ONLY 0,58 €

OUR MARKERS ARE NO DISPOSABLE PRODUCTS!

In 2023 alone, we were able to save an impressive 32 tons of plastic through the sale of our refill bottles, which would otherwise have been added to our ecosystem through the production of individual markers. Converted into our markers (each marker measures 15 cm), this corresponds to 2.5 million markers.

ECONOMICAL

MOLOTOW markers are not one-day lovers: thanks to patented technologies, our markers can be refilled at least 50 times – without any wear and tear.

A marker refill costs just 1.21 € on average. This corresponds to a saving of up to 75% compared to buying a new single marker.

In addition, our markers are approx. 2.5 times more productive→ than other marker products.

Through numerous replacement tips and refill bottles, we generate long-term positive purchasing experiences for consumers, who become returning customers for retailers.

Environmentally conscious and resource-saving: our production

STRICT ENVIRONMENTAL STANDARDS

At MOLOTOW, we place great importance on adhering to strict environmental standards in our production processes. This is why we collaborate closely with partners such as EMAS-certified Schneider Schreibgeräte GmbH, which is distinguished by numerous sustainable initiatives. A prime example of this partnership is the MOLOTOW SKETCHER, which is produced at Schneider’s facility in the Black Forest. The twin marker consists of over 92% recycled plastic, certified by independent institutes. By using these recycled materials, 79% of CO₂ emissions are saved during the production of a complete marker. Additionally, the SKETCHER’s innovative cartridge system allows for the reduction of up to 56% (10.6 g) plastic when purchasing a new cartridge instead of a complete marker. This sustainable approach is reflected in every step – from production to application by the user.

THINK CARBON-NEUTRAL

With our brand FLAME, we set new standards in spray can production. As the first graffiti spray can brand, FLAME ORANGE and FLAME BLUE have been certified carbon-neutral. To minimize emissions, we rely on innovative technologies such as optimized aerosols, recycled packaging materials, and the use of renewable energy in production. We also work closely with our production partner Cosmos Lac, who implements measures such as planting trees in Africa to offset CO₂ emissions. This initiative allows us to save 1,162 tons of CO₂ annually – equivalent to planting 50,000 trees.

However, at MOLOTOW, we believe that sustainability is never finished. We continuously challenge existing production processes to identify new opportunities for improvement. This approach of continuous optimization is a core part of our corporate philosophy and our responsibility to the environment. Only through constant questioning and improvement can we continue to offer sustainable and innovative products in the future.

ENERGY-EFFICIENT COMPANY LOCATION

Sustainability starts right at our doorstep – at our company location in Lahr, in the Black Forest. Here, we consistently focus on energy efficiency: state-of-the-art solar technology enables us to cover up to 75% of our energy needs. This not only reduces our CO₂ footprint but also demonstrates our active responsibility toward the environment.

Our logistics are also designed to conserve resources. Packaging materials are designed to be as sustainable as possible, and we continually work to optimize our shipping process to minimize waste.

We are aware, however, that no one is perfect – and we recognize that there is still much potential for improvement. That is why we view this challenge as a driving force for the future. Our goal is to continuously evolve and find new solutions to meet the ecological demands of tomorrow. Sustainability is a journey we take step by step, with a clear focus on long-term improvements.

HIGHEST QUALITY LOCALLY PRODUCED

Quality and sustainability go hand in hand for us. That is why we produce most of our products in Germany. This not only ensures the highest quality standards but also significantly reduces transportation distances and the associated emissions. By minimizing procurement distances, we reduce our ecological footprint while simultaneously strengthening the local economy. Our sustainable production methods are reflected in every one of our products and underline our commitment to an environmentally friendly future.

BE SMART

Innovative & waste-reducing:our products

RECYCLING & PACKAGING CONCEPTS

For our products, we rely on environmentally friendly packaging solutions that significantly reduce plastic use where possible. A prime example of this is the MOLOTOW SKETCHER, which comes in paper and cardboard packaging. These materials are not only recyclable but also provide a resource-saving alternative to conventional plastic packaging. In addition, we design our packaging as efficiently as possible to minimize unnecessary waste and transport volume. Recycling and the reuse of materials are integral parts of our product philosophy, which we plan to expand in the future and apply to other product packaging.

PRACTICAL REFILL SYSTEMS

Our ONE4ALL series combines innovation and sustainability in a unique concept. Thanks to the R.E.M. technology (Refill. Exchange. Mix.), the markers can be refilled up to 50 times, which conserves resources and significantly reduces plastic consumption. Refilling not only saves valuable materials but also significantly lowers costs for users: Refilling a ONE4ALL twin marker costs just 0.58 € – a fraction of the price of a new product.

Furthermore, the system allows for the mixing of custom colors in empty markers, which not only encourages creativity but also ensures that fewer single-use markers need to be purchased and discarded once the color runs out. A sustainable solution that is perfectly tailored to the creative needs of our users.

We also place great importance on the durability of our markers. The high-quality materials and patented valve system ensure that the markers continue to function smoothly even after numerous refills (at least 50 times). Should a nib become worn out, it can be easily replaced, instead of replacing the entire marker.

This well-thought-out refill system, which we developed in 2008, is a central part of our product philosophy as it demonstrates how functionality, creativity, and sustainability can harmonize. Our users benefit from a system that is both environmentally friendly and offers maximum flexibility and cost efficiency for frequent users.

ACTIVE REDUCTION OF PLASTIC CONSUMPTION

By using our refillable marker systems, particularly the ONE4ALL series, we were able to save an impressive 32 tons of plastic in 2023 alone through the sale of our refills. In converted numbers, this means we saved approximately 2.5 million markers. This saving results from consistently refilling the markers instead of constantly purchasing new products. The ONE4ALL markers are refillable at least 50 times, which significantly reduces the need for new purchases and thus sustainably lowers plastic consumption.

Additionally, refills are cost-effective: Refilling a marker costs on average only 1.21 €, which represents a saving of up to 75% compared to purchasing a new marker. For the ONE4ALL twin marker, the refill price is even just 0.58 €, making the price advantage even more significant.

Another example of our contribution to reducing plastic and emissions is the MOLOTOW SKETCHER. This marker, made from 92% recycled plastic, allows us to save around 80% of CO₂ emissions annually compared to the production of new markers. By using recycled material, we not only save plastic but also significantly reduce the CO₂ burden. In terms of plastic, this means a saving of about 10 grams per SKETCHER compared to a marker made from new plastic.

These sustainable concepts promote environmentally conscious consumption behavior and actively contribute to reducing plastic waste and emissions.

BE INSPIRING

Responsible & encouraging:our commitment

SUPPORT AND NETWORKING FOR ARTISTS

At MOLOTOW, we understand the importance of collaboration and exchange in the art and creative scenes. That is why we actively promote the networking of artists worldwide. We provide a platform where creative minds can showcase their works and inspire each other. Particularly with regard to sustainability, we see our role in fostering dialogue about environmentally friendly materials and practices, such as refilling our markers. This allows artists to learn from each other about how to work more environmentally consciously and create their art with sustainable materials. Furthermore, we support initiatives that strengthen the exchange of knowledge and resources within the creative community. Through collaboration with various artist groups and providing products and training, we help shape a more sustainable and socially responsible art scene.

INSPIRING YOUTH WORK

Supporting young talent is a core concern of MOLOTOW. Through our social projects and sponsorships, we support initiatives for young children, school programs, and art schools to inspire and nurture the next generation of creative minds. It is particularly important to us to raise awareness about the importance of sustainability in the creative sector. We not only offer support in the form of sponsored materials but also engage in events that allow young people to explore the principles of sustainable art, such as the annual Creative Camp at the splash! Festival.

This also includes educating about the responsible use of materials and techniques that conserve resources. Through our collaborations with schools and institutions, we aim to encourage young people to express their creativity while taking responsibility for their environment.

TANGIBLE AWARENESS-RAISING WORK

Sustainability and health are topics that, at first glance, may not seem related to graffiti. However, at MOLOTOW, it is especially important to educate and share knowledge regarding both environmental issues and health protection. We emphasize the proper use of our products in our workshops and training, which we offer to artists, distributors, and their staff. These sessions not only provide information about the sustainable use and refilling of our products but also emphasize the correct protection against aerosols. Particularly in indoor projects and large outdoor works, protection against harmful fumes is crucial. We recommend and train the use of respiratory masks and appropriate protective clothing to ensure that both artists and their surroundings are safe.

Furthermore, we are deeply committed to educating about graffiti as an art form. Unfortunately, graffiti is often associated with vandalism, which hinders its recognition as a form of creative expression. To combat this, we hosted the first pure graffiti exhibition in the K31 Gallery in 2004, providing a platform for the art form and promoting its importance within the art scene. We also strive to ensure that graffiti is seen as art and not vandalism by making it clear on our spray cans that they should be used for artistic projects and not illegal activities.

Another important aspect of our awareness-raising work is our engagement with the younger generation. In workshops with children and young people, we emphasize the responsible use of spray cans and teach them how to protect themselves properly when spraying. Our goal is for young artists to not only be creative but also work safely and understand the importance of handling materials and safety measures properly.

Through this comprehensive educational work, we hope to help graffiti gain the recognition it deserves as a respected art form, practiced in a responsible and sustainable way.
